Services

The Five O’Clock Club offers the very highest quality, most affordable outplacement services available for professionals, managers and executives. Fortune 500 as well as smaller corporations and not-for-profits have used The Five O’Clock Club’s services for individuals and for downsizings of up to 500 employees.

Founded in 1978 by Kate Wendleton , The Five O’Clock Club was a major part of Fortune magazine’s video on “How to Get a Job.” The Today Show, CNN, CNBC, Larry King, National Public Radio, CBS, The New York Times, The Chicago Tribune, The Wall Street Journal, The Economist . . . are just some of the places you’ve seen, heard and read about us.

The Five O’Clock Club specializes in providing the very service job hunters need most: the career coaching itself (as opposed to office space and ancillary services). Because we do not have the heavy real estate expenses that burden the traditional outplacement firms, we can provide sophisticated coaching at a fraction of the fees charged by these companies.

The service we offer is very different from that offered by traditional outplacement firms:

  • Half of our attendees are employed, a balance that makes for a healthier atmosphere and facilitates networking with members who have current corporate connections.
  • Our clients find employment in less than half the number of weeks it takes the average U.S. professional, manager and executive.
  • Our clients’ salaries range from $30,000 to over $500,000 a year, and work with appropriate coaches and other job seekers who are in their general salary range.
  • Our approach is based on 25 years of research into the best career development and job-search techniques.
  • Our best-selling set of books and our audio CD’s serve as the basis for helping each person move along in his or her search.

Difficult Searches are Okay With Us

Our goal is to help people get into the right jobs, not just any job. Our research-based approach makes it easier for us to help them. For example:

  • In 12 weekly sessions, one person moved from tax accounting to head of Internet sales.
  • Another who was head of a small not-for-profit became the head of marketing for a biotech market research company.
  • A college graduate who was working as a bookstore clerk got his dream job in financial research on Wall Street (after a relatively long search).

How It Works

This high-quality service is delivered through books and audio tapes, teleconferencing, and the Internet. Hence, our service is available to job hunters everywhere.

Participants receive a set of 16 lectures on audio CD’s by Kate Wendleton and listen to one lecture per week in their home or car.

Participants join in the weekly telephone conference with a senior Five O’Clock Club career coach from the convenience of their home, or anywhere else. This is a small group strategy session. They may do this for ONE FULL YEAR of coaching.

Members enjoy the Five O’Clock Club web site including the members only section.

This is a highly effective and innovative process:

  • In one “Insider” teleconference group, there is a health care senior vice president in California, an attorney in Maryland, a systems development manager in South Dakota, among others.
  • In another group, a clinical nuclear medical technologist in Vermont, a human resources consultant in California and a senior claims adjuster in New Jersey.
  • Clients exchange resumes, cover letters and marketing plans through a protected area of The Five O’Clock Club website. And they can also network with other Five O’Clock Club members through our LinkedIn Group of over 1000 participants.
  • In addition, clients work privately with their career coach to determine a career direction, develop a resume, or strategize salary negotiations.

Pricing for Career coaching and Related Services: The Career Coaching Package for those earning $100,000 or more is $5,000 and includes 14 hours of private coaching! For those earning less than $100,000 a year, the price is $3,000 and includes 8 hours of private coaching. Packages are also available for those earning $200,000 and up. All packages include guaranteed private coaching and a minimum of ONE YEAR of small group career coaching – the very service job hunters need most!

THIS PACKAGE INCLUDES

  • Private career coaching sessions with a Five O’Clock Club-certified Career Coach to determine a career direction, develop a résumé, plan salary negotiations, etc. (Hours must be used within ONE YEAR of starting with The Five O’Clock Club.)
  • Up to ONE YEAR of small-group teleconference coaching (average approximately 5 or 6 participants in a group) headed by a senior Five O’Clock Club career consultant.
  • 2-year membership in The Five O. Clock Club. Benefits include:
    • a jam-packed Beginner’s Kit
    • a membership card & one-year subscription to The Five O’Clock News
    • access to our LinkedIn Group for members who have attended four or more sessions (so they know how to network).
  • the complete set of our four books (Targeting a Great Career; Packaging Yourself: The Targeted Resume; Shortcut Your Search: The Best Way to Get Meetings; and Mastering the Job Interview and Winning the Money Game )
  • a boxed set of 16 audio-CD Five O’Clock Club presentations. (40 minutes each)

Space and other facilities: We find that most clients have computers — and certainly answering machines or cell phones — at home and do not require outside space. However, space is available throughout the country and can be purchased separately at a cost lower than through traditional outplacement firms.

It is part of our ethical standard not to abandon a person in mid-search. A particular person may have a difficult search and need more time than the average. Therefore, if we are handling ten or more people from one organization, there is an extra benefit as follows:

  • A person with a difficult search may receive individual and/or group coaching support fa in excess of the average. This virtually guarantees that each person will receive help throughout his or her entire search.
  • In addition, if a person takes a position that is a mistake, he or she may return to The Five O’Clock Club for group coaching within that first year (since the date they joined us). If a person takes a consulting assignment, his or her time can be put on hold, thus extending the length of the package.
