What People Say About UsAbout Our Clubs and Our Career Counseling
Service The following is a recent letter to Kate: <return address> January 25, 2000 Kate Wendleton The
Five O. Clock Club Dear Kate, I attended the club this past summer, really used what I learned, got four job offers, and selected the one that I felt was best. I became the Director of Communications at <omit> Magazine. Fast forward to January 5 when I went in to work and was told, along with my co-workers, that our parent company had pulled the plug on the magazine and we were all out of a job. So, I did something that I learned in the club, which was to let everyone know I was looking. I sent out an c-mail to all my professional contacts, letting them know what had happened to the magazine, and to me, and where they could contact me going forward. By four oclock that afternoon I received an e-mail from someone at a major Internet communications and marketing firm with whom I had often worked through <omit>, asking me to have lunch the following week. Over the weekend, I happened to be watching "Weekend Today" and there you were.. reminding me not to say a number first during a salary negotiation. Something I had forgotten because I hadn. t been negotiating, or expecting to for some time. On Tuesday I had lunch with the person who had e-mailed me. He brought me hack to the office, introduced me around, a few more people spoke with me and the next thing you know they were asking me what kind of salary 1 was looking for and making me an offer. Am I glad that I saw you on television that day. . ~ had I opened my big mouth, I would have cost myself $20,000 - $30,000. I will earn nearly three times as much money in 2000 as I did in 1999! This week, two of my friends who are looking for jobs joined the club. I am happy to be renewing and wish you and everyone else at the 5 O. Clock Club all the best for a wonderful New Year.Best wishes,
